A celebration of punk rock and rockers since the early 1970s. Punkrock developed in the UK, the USA and Australia during themid-1970s as a grass-roots reaction to the perceived excesses ofmainstream 1970s rock. By late 1976, bands such as the Ramones inNew York and the Sex Pistols and The Clash in London wererecognised as the vanguard of a new musical movement, which wouldspread around the world. An associated punk subculture emerged, expressing youthful rebellion and characterised by distinctivestyles of clothing and adornment, including brightly colouredMohican hairstyles, spiked leather jackets and chokers and rippedT-shirts and a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies. 500 imagesfrom the MirrorPix archives illustrate the world of punk rock, capturing the atmosphere of gigs and venues, at festivals and inthe recording studio. News pictures expose the hard-living,anarchic lifestyle of punk musicians and their transition into moreacceptable members of society; the fashions and colourfulhairstyles of punks and the conflicts with other cultural groupssuch as Teddy boys and football hooligans.
